The Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1963 by the former graduates of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest. The ensemble operates as a national ensemble in Hungary and plays a vital role in the Hungarian music scene, while it has also gained great international fame in the past six decades. Today, the orchestra is considered one of the most outstanding representatives of chamber music worldwide for its precision, genre versatility and exceptional adaptability.
Since its early days 60 years ago, the ensemble has toured more than fifty countries led by Frigyes Sándor and János Rolla and since 2016, by Péter Tfirst, performing at the Carnegie Hall in New York, the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Sydney Opera House, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and the Théatre de la Ville in Paris, among many other places.
The ensemble has not only performed in world-famous concert halls, but has also shared the stage with virtuoso artists, such as Sviatoslav Richter, Mstislav Rostropovich, Isaac Stern, Yehudi Menuhin, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Martha Argerich, Julia Fischer, Vadim Repin, András Schiff, Emmanuel Pahud, Vadim Gluzman, Denis Matsuev, Mischa Maisky, Maxim Vengerov, Ilya Gringolts, David Fray, Denis Bouriakov, Júlia Pusker, Gábor Boldoczki and Gábor Takács-Nagy.
At the beginning of 2020, the world-famous cellist István Várdai joined the orchestra as its Artistic Director to create a new artistic concept and to enhance professional training.
