History
When the Festspielhaus St. Pölten opened with a concert by the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich on 1 March 1997, it marked a milestone for the cultural life of Lower Austria. The construction and the existence of this venue, unique throughout Austria, made a significant impact on the country’s artistic landscape. Beyond the innovative architecture, the very decision to build a large venue in St. Pölten to host cultural events of the highest standard all year round – and to provide funding for such an undertaking – appears almost revolutionary from today’s perspective. At the time, this decision contributed to providing the young provincial capital with a strong profile of its own.
